Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields
nature
仙石原すすき草原
A vast highland meadow of silver pampas grass that shimmers in the autumn wind with mountain views.
Covering the western slopes of Hakone's volcanic highlands at 650m elevation, this expansive field of Japanese pampas grass (susuki) transforms from green in summer to shimmering silver-gold from September through November. A walking path cuts through the tall grasses, which grow well above head height, creating an immersive tunnel of swaying plumes backlit by afternoon sun.
Visit in late afternoon when the sun backlights the grass plumes from the west. Each strand glows like fiber optic cable. Mid-October is peak silver.
