千間堂池のトンボ
The shallow pond next to this building is the habitat of some 15 kinds of dragonfly, including several threatened species.
The shallow clay-bottomed pond at Sengendo supports around 15 dragonfly species, including several that are threatened. Because hard clay soil prevents water from permeating, the pond formed naturally from pooling rainwater and remains a stable wetland habitat. Dragonflies breed here, with larvae living in the water before emerging as adults and migrating to the surrounding forest. Notable residents include the bright red scarlet skimmer, visible from May through early September, and the Ceriagrion melanurum damselfly, a light green and yellow species sensitive to agricultural pesticides and found here through late summer.
