Overview
Forested 'City of Trees' blends modern urban culture with feudal lord Date Masamune's castle town heritage and gardens.
Sendai City Museum stands near the ruins of Aoba Castle and focuses on the history of Sendai through the lens of the Date clan, the powerful domain lords who ruled the region for centuries. The collection includes armor, swords, and personal effects of Date Masamune, the one-eyed general who founded Sendai in 1600. Maps and scale models show how the castle town developed, and exhibits on everyday life in the Edo period give context beyond the warrior culture. Good coverage of the 2011 earthquake and recovery is also here.
