The Senami Onsen spa resort area on the Sea of Japan, just west of central Murakami, combines hot-spring bathing with expansive ocean views and vibrant beach life in summer.
A seaside hot spring resort on the Sea of Japan coast, Senami Onsen clusters a dozen hotels and inns along a street that meets the beach. Most face the water, giving bathers an unobstructed view of the sea while they soak in calcium-chloride-rich water. The source, discovered in 1904 when oil prospectors struck a geyser instead, still vents 95-degree steam at Funto Park above town. Foot baths are free at three locations around the area, and you can buy eggs at the information center and boil them yourself in the park's purpose-built container.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
