関宿
1.8km of 200+ original Edo buildings on the Tokaido highway. Japan's most authentic post-town.
Best-preserved post-town on the old Tokaido highway, with over 200 original Edo-period buildings stretching along 1.8 kilometers of the main street. Unlike many post-towns that were rebuilt or reconstructed for tourism, the buildings here are genuinely original. You walk past merchant houses with deep eaves, latticed windows, and family crests above the door. A few shops sell local goods, but the town has not been overhauled for visitors, which is exactly what makes it feel different from more famous equivalents.
