Seirinji Temple

Founded in 1577 as a castle family temple and later moved to its current hillside location in 1685, Seirinji has one unusual distinction: it holds a memorial for Akechi Mitsuhide, the samurai who killed unifier Oda Nobunaga in 1582. Because Mitsuhide's daughter had married into the Hosokawa family before her father's betrayal, his head was brought to Miyazu and is believed to be buried in the temple cemetery. The main hall holds a Buddha Triad and temple treasures, including a Muromachi-period silk painting of the reclining Buddha displayed each February. The garden features a spring fountain, a carp pond, and the original two-storied bell-tower gate.
