The Sea and Life Museum is an intriguing museum primarily devoted to fish.
Housed in a century-old sake warehouse complex beside the port in Sakaiminato, this museum displays around 4,000 taxidermy marine specimens made by Tane Masayuki, who developed a technique for preserving the full exterior of fish while removing the internal structures, stuffing the skin with sawdust and hardening with resin. Large specimens include white shark, bluefin tuna, and oarfish. Most were caught locally and are grouped by taxonomy. A full fishing boat is on display and visitors can board a vessel called the Minato Maru. The collection also includes farming tools, traditional garments, and woodblock prints by noted local printmaker Hashimoto Okiie.
