Overview
Canal-side Edo merchant quarter with boat rides, working breweries, and preserved timber facades.
The first Kanto district designated for traditional building preservation, Sawara's canal-side merchant quarter preserves Edo and Meiji-era timber buildings with latticed facades and tile roofs. Flat-bottomed boats glide down the willow-lined Ono River past soy sauce breweries and sake shops still in operation. The town was a prosperous river-trade hub, and its compact walkability makes it one of the most authentic 'Little Edo' experiences near Tokyo.
