Sawando Onsen
onsen
沢渡温泉
An old highway network connected various parts of the country with the city of Kamakura, the seat of political control during the Kamakura period (1185–1333).
Sawando's hot springs were only discovered in 1998 when construction of the Abo Tunnel through the Northern Alps struck an unknown geothermal source. The water comes out clear, with a faint sulfur smell, at around 70 degrees Celsius, then travels seven kilometers down the mountain to the baths. Long before the onsen existed, Sawando was a post town on an old highway connecting Hida and Shinshu provinces. Today it also functions as a transport hub for Kamikochi, Norikura Kogen, Shirahone Onsen, and the gateway to Chubusangaku National Park, making it a practical base for hikers heading into the Northern Alps.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
