Overview

The Satsuki Matsubara Promenade is a paved walkway through a section of the Satsuki Matsubara pine grove along the Munakata coast.

This 1.5-kilometer paved walkway runs through a coastal pine grove that was first planted over 400 years ago under Kuroda Nagamasa, who ruled the area in the early 17th century. He planted eight such groves along this coastline to protect against erosion. Most of the current trees are around 200 years old, and the community actively plants seedlings to maintain the grove. From the walkway you can see the islands of Oshima and Jinoshima, and on a clear day, the sacred and restricted island of Okinoshima about 60 kilometers offshore. A cycling course begins at the nearby roadside station.
