Overview
A forest-hidden Inari shrine with dozens of red torii gates tunneling through dense bamboo and cedar.
Tucked into a narrow ravine behind a residential neighborhood, Sasuke Inari features rows of weathered vermillion torii gates ascending through thick forest. According to legend, the deity here appeared in a dream to the young Minamoto no Yoritomo, urging him to raise an army, which he did, founding the Kamakura Shogunate. Fox statues peer from moss-covered alcoves throughout the grounds.
Local tips
Visit on a misty or rainy morning when the torii gates glisten and fog drifts through the trees. It's the closest thing to a Ghibli film in real life.
