Overview
Sasagamine Dam is a rock-filled earthen dam between Lake Otomi and the Seki River.
Lake Otomi formed over 30,000 years ago when the summit of Mt. Kurohime collapsed, sending a massive landslide across the Seki River. The Sasagamine Dam, built in its current form between 1970 and 1979, holds 900,000 tons of water that supplies hydroelectric power and irrigates fields 50 kilometers downstream. Twelve hydropower stations were built along the river between 1906 and 1939, specifically to lower local electricity costs and encourage development. From the dam's north face, the peaks of Mt. Myoko, Mt. Hiuchi, Mt. Yake, and several others line the horizon from right to left.
