Overview

The winding mountain road over Santaro Pass in central Amami-Oshima was once part of the main highway that connected the northern and southern halves of the island.

The old mountain road over Santaro Pass in central Amami-Oshima was bypassed by a tunnel in 1989 and has since been reclaimed by subtropical forest. At night, it is one of the best places on the island to observe endemic wildlife, including the Amami rabbit, Amami woodcock, Otton frog, and fireflies. The venomous habu viper is also present. Nighttime wildlife tours require an advance online reservation, and a guide experienced in spotting local animals is strongly recommended. Drivers should observe the 10 km/h speed limit and use only one spotlight per car to avoid disturbing or injuring animals.
