Overview

A 16km gorge with emerald pools, waterfalls, and hand-pulled ferry boats through sheer cliff walls.

One of Japan's top five gorges, Sandankyo stretches 16km through vertical rock walls with waterfalls, pools, and dense forest. The highlight is crossing the narrowest section on a hand-pulled ferry through a cliff gap barely wider than the boat. The autumn colors here rival any in Japan but see almost no international visitors.

Local tips

The hand-pulled ferry at Sarutobi only runs April-November. Visit mid-November for peak autumn colors along the entire gorge.
