Overview

Elevator descent into a Heian-era pirate cave with Benzaiten shrine and crashing ocean waves.

An elevator descends 36 meters through a 50-meter-high sea cliff to reveal a dimly lit cave where Kumano pirates once sheltered their boats during the Heian era. A 200-meter walkway passes a carving of Benzaiten draped in over 100 hanging lanterns, with ocean waves crashing into the cave mouth. Above, a 2-kilometer clifftop path offers vertigo-inducing views of the rocky Shirahama coastline.
