Sanboin Garden
三宝院庭園
Overview
Sub-temple of Daigo-ji in southeast Kyoto, home to an ornate garden designed specifically for flower viewing.
Sublime landscape garden within the Daigo-ji temple complex in southeastern Kyoto, originally redesigned in 1598 under the direct supervision of warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi for his legendary cherry blossom viewing party. The garden masterfully combines a large pond with islands, bridges, carefully placed rocks transported from across Japan, and mature trees to create a composition of extraordinary beauty and harmony. The adjacent Sanboin temple halls contain stunning fusuma sliding-door paintings and the Omote Shoin reception room, a masterpiece of Momoyama-period architecture. Spring remains the finest time to visit, when hundreds of cherry trees throughout the Daigo-ji grounds burst into bloom, continuing the hanami tradition Hideyoshi established over four centuries ago.
