San'in Kaigan National Park stretches 75 kilometers along the Sea of Japan from the Tottori sand dunes in the west to the Hatcho coast in Kyotango, Kyoto. The park holds UNESCO Global Geopark status for geological features that record the separation of the Japanese archipelago from the Asian continent and the formation of the Sea of Japan around 20 million years ago. Distinct rock strata, volcanic formations, coastal terraces, and the sand dunes themselves are all visible products of that process. Deep valleys, river plains, and cascades carved by later erosion add variety to the landscape. The Tottori dunes, 2.4 kilometers wide and 16 kilometers long, are the park's most visited feature.
