Overview

Walking trail across dramatic black lava fields from the 1914 eruption.

A three-kilometer walking trail across the jagged black lava fields of Sakurajima's 1914 eruption. The raw volcanic landscape, with pioneer plants slowly reclaiming the rock, offers a vivid sense of the volcano's destructive and regenerative power.

Local tips

Wear sturdy shoes as the lava rock is sharp and uneven. The trail ends near the longest foot bath in Japan at 100 meters long, perfect for tired feet.
