Sakai City Museum
堺市博物館
Overview
The Sakai City Museum focuses on the kofun burial mounds in the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group and Sakai’s history as a center of craftsmanship and commerce.
This museum sits inside Daisen Park near the tomb of Emperor Nintoku, the largest kofun burial mound in Japan, which has never been excavated due to its imperial connection. The collection focuses on the kofun burial culture through terracotta haniwa figures, including rare wooden examples, and a video explaining how the massive tumuli were likely constructed. A second wing documents Sakai's merchant history through matchlock guns, ship models, and looms. Sakai was Japan's primary firearms producer during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the museum holds the largest surviving Japanese matchlock gun on display.
