Overview
One of Japan's largest outdoor baths, set in a volcanic park with acidic, healing waters.
Located at the end of a walking trail through Sainokawara Park, this massive outdoor bath covers over 500 square meters. The water is highly acidic and sulfur-rich, sourced directly from the volcanic springs that make Kusatsu famous. Bathers are surrounded by steam vents and rugged rock formations, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The facility is essentially just a changing room and the massive pools, focusing entirely on the experience of soaking in nature. As part of Kusatsu's town-wide initiative to welcome international tourists, this bathhouse is fully tattoo-friendly. It is particularly striking in winter when the steam rises against a backdrop of thick snow.
Local tips
The bath is very large and the temperature varies significantly depending on where you sit relative to the water inlet; move around to find your ideal heat level.
