UNESCO World Heritage Site

Overview

Historic gold mine featuring explorable hand-dug tunnels and a uniquely split mountain.

For centuries, this mine produced vast amounts of gold to fund the Tokugawa Shogunate. Visitors can walk deep into the original, hand-dug mountain tunnels, complete with animatronic displays demonstrating Edo-period mining techniques. The split Doyu-no-Wareto mountain is a striking visual testament to human labor.

Local tips

Bring a light jacket even in the middle of summer, as the deep mining tunnels remain quite chilly year-round.
