Ryukyu Mura
琉球村
Overview
Living history village recreating traditional Ryukyu Kingdom life with historic houses, crafts, and performances.
Ryukyu Mura in Onna Village gathers traditional Okinawan houses relocated from across the island into a reconstructed village setting, several of them registered Tangible Cultural Properties. The red-tiled buildings are arranged along village paths that feel reasonably authentic rather than theme-parked, and each house typically demonstrates a specific aspect of traditional life or craft. Workshops run throughout the day covering bingata textile dyeing, sanshin three-stringed instrument playing, pottery, and traditional weaving. Eisa dance and folk music performances fill the main village stage at regular intervals. Special events tied to Okinawan festivals and holidays bring additional performances and activity. It is a good starting point for understanding the Ryukyu Kingdom's distinct culture before visiting the actual castle sites and archaeological sites elsewhere on the island.
