Zen temple in Joetsu, Niigata, closely associated with the legendary warlord Uesugi Kenshin, who studied here as a young monk. The temple preserves Kenshin's childhood training quarters and a museum of Sengoku-period artifacts.

Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall — left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
