Kagoshima's prefectural museum of culture built on the former site of Tsurumaru Castle. Exhibits trace the Satsuma domain's outsized role in the Meiji Restoration, samurai culture, and the region's unique ties to Ryukyu and Southeast Asia.

Local tips

The third-floor Meiji Restoration gallery has English audio guides available free at the front desk. Combined with the castle ruins outside, allow about two hours.
