Rairaikyo Gorge

A one-kilometer walking trail follows the Natori River through dramatically eroded rock formations in Akiu Onsen town. Water has carved whirlpools, overhangs, and a natural heart-shaped hollow in the canyon walls that has become a pilgrimage for couples. Autumn turns the gorge into a corridor of crimson and gold, best viewed from the bridges spanning the narrow chasm.
