A Tendai temple founded in 835 by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi), the founding site of shomyo Buddhist chant in Japan. The temple sits at the end of a 1.2km forest path running northeast from Sanzen-in, climbing alongside the Ritsugawa stream past the Otonashi waterfall. The main hall holds three Heian-era seated Buddha statues; the bell tower is on a small ridge above the hall.
The Otonashi waterfall is 200 meters before the temple gate, signposted. Entry 400 yen. Allow 90 minutes for the round-trip walk plus temple visit.
