Ponds of Jododaira

Several volcanic ponds are within walking distance of the Jododaira Visitor Center in Fukushima. Kamanuma, shaped like a sickle blade, is surrounded by rare wildflowers including a native species that blooms only in August and September. Goshikinuma sits inside a volcanic crater on Mt. Issaikyo and shifts between deep blue and sapphire depending on the weather, earning the nickname 'The Witch's Eye.' The smaller Okenuma fills an ancient stratovolcano crater and is accessible in ten minutes from the visitor center, surrounded by deciduous forest that turns vivid colors in autumn.
