Overview
Every August, Aomori's city center shuts down for the Nebuta Festival, and the parade route becomes the most animated stretch of road in the Tohoku region. Night parades run from August 2 to 6 starting at 7:10 p.m., with a daytime parade on August 7. The floats travel a 3-kilometer loop through four roads, taking about two hours per round. The wide boulevard of National Route gives a broad view of the illuminated floats, while the narrow shopping street of Shinmachi Dori brings the figures close to the crowd. Fireworks signal the simultaneous departure of all floats at the start of each night parade. The event continues even in rain.
