大斎原
The original, riverbank site of Kumano Hongu Taisha, marked by Japan's largest torii gate.
The original, sacred riverbank site of Kumano Hongu Taisha before it was relocated due to a massive flood in 1889. Today, it is marked by the largest torii gate in the world, standing majestically against the forest and river. The open, empty space is incredibly spiritual and serene.
Look at the base of the massive gate to find the small stone monuments marking where the original shrine pavilions stood.
