Otaru Port North Breakwater

The 1,289-meter concrete breakwater at Otaru Port was designed in the 1890s by engineer Hiroi Isami, who calculated that angling the concrete blocks against incoming waves would reduce impact more effectively than traditional stone stacking. He also added volcanic ash to the concrete mix to improve durability after observing early cracking in similar structures at Yokohama and Nagasaki. Hiroi's wave force formula remained in use internationally until the 1980s, and the breakwater itself still protects the port after more than a century. Hiroi studied at Sapporo Agricultural College before training on the Mississippi River and later teaching students who worked on the Panama Canal.
