Osezaki Lighthouse
landmark
大瀬崎灯台
This remote lighthouse stands on the westernmost point of the Goto Islands.
Osezaki Lighthouse stands at the westernmost tip of the Goto Islands, on the last point of Japan that seventh and eighth-century envoys would see before crossing the East China Sea toward China. The current concrete structure dates to 1971 and runs on solar power, its light visible 22 kilometers offshore. Below the lighthouse, 60-meter cliffs expose tilted rock strata carved by strong Pacific winds and waves. An observation platform just below the summit of Mt. Ose overlooks the full stretch of rugged coastline and the rolling island interior. The platform is also the starting point of a 2.4-kilometer round-trip trail through camellia groves to the lighthouse base.
