Origins of Onuma Pond

Onuma Pond sits at 944 meters above sea level near the gateway to Hachimantai, nearly 200 meters across and either volcanic or tectonic in origin, though researchers still debate which. The pond has been shrinking for years as surrounding wetlands expand and sediment accumulates. A walking trail circles it, passing thickets of tall reeds, clusters of yellow waterlilies in summer, and forests of beech and Maries' fir. The area is good for watching birds and insects, and the changing landscape itself is the main lesson, showing how a wetland ecosystem slowly transforms over time.
