小鹿田焼の里
Mountain village famous for its ontayaki pottery, characterized by geometric patterns.
Tucked into a narrow mountain valley outside Hita, Onta is a tiny village of about ten pottery families who have been producing ontayaki for over 300 years using only traditional techniques, clay from the local hillside, water-powered crushing mills, wood-fired climbing kilns. The resulting pottery is characterized by distinctive geometric patterns created through techniques like tobikanna (chattering) and hakeme (brush marks). You can walk between the workshops, watch artisans at work, and buy directly. No two pieces are identical. The rhythmic thunk of the water-powered mortars crushing clay is the village's constant soundtrack.
