Overview

See the legend on the map for distances, durations, and modes of transportation.

The Onsen Town Sightseeing Walk follows the Hoki River through Shiobara Onsen, a valley known for autumn foliage and literary associations. Key stops include Yuppo no Sato, a circular footbath pavilion where bathers soak while looking out at a central pool or the surrounding scenery, and Myounji Temple, where over 3,000 tree peonies bloom in mid-May. The Furumachi district at the center of town has old inns, restaurants, and souvenir shops, and is where you can try tote-yaki, a local crepe unique to Shiobara. The Imagination Archives museum highlights writing by the many authors who visited the valley from the 1880s onward.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
