Overview

The Onomichi City Museum of Art stands in Senkoji Park, on a hilltop overlooking the city center, accessible on foot or via the Senkoji Ropeway.

The Onomichi City Museum of Art sits in Senkoji Park on a hill above the city, reached by ropeway or on foot. First opened in 1980, it was redesigned in 2003 by Ando Tadao, who added a concrete and glass annex that now serves as the main entrance. The annex and the original tiled-roof building look separate from outside but connect seamlessly inside. Ando incorporated deliberate open spaces throughout for views over Onomichi, which compete with the art for attention. The collection spans local and international work, but the modernist furniture collection fits the space especially well. Chairs by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson are placed throughout the galleries for visitors to sit in.
