Unhurried white-sand surf town on the Boso coast, famous for golden-eye snapper and warm waters.
Two kilometers of white sand beach on Chiba's outer Boso coast, Onjuku retains the unhurried character of a Japanese surf town untouched by resort development. The Tsuki no Sabaku (Desert of the Moon) monument recalls a beloved children's song set here, and the warm Kuroshio current keeps the water temperate into autumn. Local guesthouses serve fresh kinmedai (golden-eye snapper) caught by the town's fishing fleet, a Boso specialty.
