Exhibits at the Onie no Sato History Museum demonstrate how people used to live in the area.
The Onie no Sato History Museum in Kunisaki documents the Shujo Onie Festival, a lunar new year tradition held at nearby Tennenji Temple for over 1,000 years. The festival centers on a fire dance where monks dressed as red and black oni brandish blazing torches to calm evil spirits. Unlike the fearsome image of ogres elsewhere in Japan, the oni of Kunisaki are considered bearers of good fortune. The museum displays festival masks, costumes, and props, and shows a short film of the event. An interactive exhibit includes a VR walk over the Mumyo Bridge, a historically railingless bridge used in ascetic practice. The restaurant serves handmade soba and festival-style grilled mochi.
