Omiya Bonsai Art Museum

The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum in Saitama is the world's first public museum devoted entirely to bonsai, displaying trees alongside exhibitions on the philosophy and horticultural technique behind the art form. Some of the trees on display are over 500 years old, their twisted trunks shaped and maintained across many generations of caretakers. The museum sits within the Omiya Bonsai Village, a neighborhood that formed in the 1920s when Tokyo nurseries relocated here for cleaner air and more growing space. Several working nurseries in the area are open to visitors. Seasonal events highlight specific qualities: autumn coloring, winter silhouettes, spring flowering varieties. It is a 30-minute train ride from central Tokyo and an easy half-day on its own or combined with the nearby Railway Museum.
