Omi Shrine at Umagase
shrine
大御神社
Sun-goddess shrine on 15-million-year-old volcanic rock, with a natural cross-shaped sea formation.
Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, this shrine sits on a volcanic rock pillar formed by underwater pyroclastic flow 15 million years ago. The adjacent Sea-Cruz rock formation, a natural cross shape carved by erosion, has become a pilgrimage spot, and the nearby Umagase cliffs are the tallest sea cliffs on the Nichinan coast. The shrine's torii frames a striking Pacific Ocean panorama at sunrise.
