Overview

Bizarrely eroded sea rocks protruding from water, dramatic formations reaching 40 meters height, natural sculptures.

Omi Island, off the coast of Nagato in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is nicknamed the 'Sea Alps' for its dramatic coastline of towering rock pillars, sea caves, and bizarre wind-sculpted formations, some reaching 40 meters in height. Sightseeing boats cruise along the western shore, threading through natural arches and past columns of basalt that have been shaped by millennia of waves and weather. The island also has several quiet beaches and a network of walking trails along the cliffs. The best time to visit is spring through autumn when boat tours run frequently and the sea is at its most vivid blue. A bridge connects the island to the mainland, so you can also explore on foot or by car.
