Overview

Scenic three-kilometer gorge known for autumn foliage, hiking trails, and the historic Okutsu hot spring resort.

Okutsu Valley follows a river through the mountains of Kagamino, and in autumn the trail corridor turns vivid as maples and ginkgo trees change color together. The walking path is straightforward and well-maintained, passing stone bridges and small waterfalls along the valley floor. Photographers come specifically for the late October and early November color peak, when the red and yellow canopy reflects in the slow-moving river. Outside autumn, the valley is green and pleasant for a quiet forest walk, and a few small restaurants and onsen inns nearby make it easy to pair with a longer stay in the area.
