Okuragahama
beach
おくらヶ浜
Sweeping crescent beach on Miyazaki's Hyuga coast, popular for surfing and watching waves crash against rock formations.
Long stretch of sandy coast in Hyuga, facing the Pacific and shaped over time by the ocean swell coming in from the open sea. The consistent beach break has made it one of the more established surf spots on the Miyazaki coast, with a local surf culture that has built up around the conditions here. In summer, the beach hosts parts of the Hyuga Hyottoko Summer Festival, one of the more visually unusual festivals in Kyushu, where performers wear comic mask characters for dances and parades along the shore. Rental equipment for surfing is available near the beach, and the flat surrounding area has parking and a few small food stalls.
