Okuni Jinja Shrine Buildings

Okuni Jinja enshrines Okuninushi no Mikoto, the Shinto deity of agriculture and nation-building, in a honden built in the ancient taisha-zukuri style marked by a gabled roof with forked finials at each end. The roofs are shingled with hinoki cypress bark, harvested from surrounding forest trees and laid in overlapping layers. Because bark regrows on the living tree after harvesting, the method has been sustainable for over 1,300 years. The shrine is rebuilt every 30 to 60 years to preserve the traditional construction techniques across generations, keeping the architecture alive through practice rather than preservation alone.
