奥出雲たたらと刀剣博物館
The Okuizumo Tatara and Sword Museum presents the history of tatara ironmaking and the ongoing practice of traditional swordsmithing.
Okuizumo is the only place in Japan where the ancient tatara ironmaking method is still practiced, and this museum is built around that living tradition. The first half traces the rise and decline of tatara smelting, a charcoal-fed clay furnace process that runs for days to produce the raw steel called tamahagane, prized by swordsmiths to this day. The second half shifts to the present, following current efforts to revive the craft for modern bladesmiths. It is a focused, well-told story about an industry that shaped the entire San'in region.
