Okudogo Ichiyu no Mori
奥道後 壱湯の守
Overview
Western Japan's largest open-air bath, 1,508 sqm of forest-canopy hot springs.
Ten minutes by car from the tourist crowds at Dogo Onsen, Okudogo sits in a deep valley of the Ishite River with western Japan's largest open-air bath spanning 1,508 square meters. The alkaline sulfur springs feed seven distinct bath types surrounded by forest canopy that erupts in autumn color. The water emerges from the same source that supplies famous Dogo Onsen, without the queues.
Local tips
Ask about any specialty baths. Many onsen have unique mineral compositions or historical significance worth knowing about. Dogo Onsen's main building might be under renovation. The annex Asuka no Yu offers the same mineral water.
