Oku-Nikko Yumoto Onsen is a natural hot spring onsen thought to have been discovered 1,200 years ago, possibly in 788, by Shodo (735–817), a great monk who founded the temples and shrines of Nikko.
Oku-Nikko Yumoto Onsen is a sulfurous hot spring area in the mountains above Nikko, said to have been discovered around 788 by the monk Shodo, who also founded the region's major temples and shrines. The spring water, a milky-white color caused by oxidation, flows from sources in the surrounding mountains. The traditional practice of toji, an extended stay for healing, is still observed here. A visit pairs well with nearby Onsenji Temple, dedicated to a Healing Buddha, and Onsen Shrine, which traces its own founding to Shodo. At the shrine, a small bronze structure engraved with the year 1513 confirms the springs were already in active use over 500 years ago.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
