Oku-Iya Niju Kazurabashi
landmark
奥祖谷二重かずら橋
Wilder, double vine bridges deep in the Iya Valley.
Deep in the remote Iya Valley of western Tokushima, two suspension bridges woven from mountain vines and wooden slats span a rocky gorge. Unlike the more visited single Kazurabashi bridge at the valley entrance, these double bridges see fewer visitors and feel genuinely wild. Walking across while looking through the plank gaps at the rushing stream below is thrilling in the best way. Nearby, a hand-powered cable car called a wild monkey lets you pull yourself across the gorge. The surrounding old-growth forest and clear river reward the winding mountain drive to get here.
A pair of vine bridges spanning the same gorge, the larger carrying foot traffic and the smaller historically used for horses. Further into the valley than the main Kazurabashi and sees a fraction of the visitors. The surrounding hamlet has traditional farmhouses and terraced hillside scenery. Access is by car or taxi from Oboke Station; no public bus reaches this point.
