Okinoshima Observation Spots

Mt. Tomi on Jinoshima rises 182 meters above the Genkai Sea, and its two observation points face toward Okinoshima, the sacred island where visitors are not permitted. Local residents have long treated these spots as yohai, places for remote worship of the island's deities. English-language signs help visitors locate Okinoshima on the horizon. Beside the observatory are traces of Edo-period stone walls, remnants of a guard post once used to watch passing ships and spot whales. A second clearing along the trail, Oshiki Observatory, turns toward Kitakyushu instead, offering a contrasting view across the sea.
