Nagayu Onsen has the highest natural carbonation of any hot spring in Japan. At Ramune Onsen (named after the fizzy drink), the cool carbonated water makes your entire body sparkle with tiny bubbles. The mineral content is believed to benefit circulation. The architect-designed modern building by Shigeru Ban is itself worth visiting.

Local tips

The outdoor carbonated bath is COLD (32°C). Stay in for 20 minutes and your skin will be completely covered in bubbles. Alternate with the hot indoor bath.
