Edo-era shrine tied to Chikamatsu's 1703 love-suicide play; today a love-prayer pilgrimage spot wedged between Umeda highrises.
An Edo-era shrine wedged between Umeda highrises, named for Ohatsu, the female lead in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's 1703 puppet play Sonezaki Shinju (The Love Suicides at Sonezaki). The play retells the real-life double suicide of Ohatsu and her lover Tokubei in the shrine's grove. Today the shrine is a pilgrimage spot for couples, with a bronze statue of the pair in the south corner.
Free entry. Ema (wooden prayer plaques) here are ordered for love and partnership outcomes; the office sells them till 18:00.
